Price vs. Value

Some words of wisdom from Victorian-era British philosopher John Ruskin:

“It is unwise to pay too much, but it is worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it cannot be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

Spending wisely, as Mr. Ruskin notes, is essentially money in the bank. Especially when it comes to deciding on home improvements and selecting a vendor that will do the job right for you, taking your best interests into account. The first step in making the right home improvement decisions is determining which projects make for a good return on investment and enhance your property value.

According to Remodeling Online’s 2003 Cost vs. Value Report, published by well-respected Remodeling Magazine, of the 15 categories listed in the annual report and averaged nationally, the cost recovered for siding replacement in 2003 is 98.1% — the second highest cost recovery rate in the listing. This is a 19% increase over the 2002 national average for replacement siding cost recovery. Seventh and eighth highest on the list are window replacements for “upscale” and “midrange” categories, coming in at 87% and 84.8% respectively — 10% and 11% increases per category over the previous year.

Obviously, if a need or desire for such home improvements exists, the next critical decision involves choosing a reputable home remodeling company.
